 Grammatical Aids

The following works will help to properly diagram words and clauses and making those "important" exegetical decisions.  Among many other decisions, whether the word(s) should be understood as an adjective or adverb, how conjunctions are syntactically functioning, what function do particles have, how the article is functioning, etc.  The different works below will note grammatical alternatives and the nuance of the Greek tenses employed by the New Testament authors.  Several works from this list should be consulted on any passage being diagrammed.

The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament
by Fritz Rienecker and Cleon Rogers

Going through the New Testament verse by verse, The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament provides help in three areas: Lexical--It identifies unusual and uncommon word forms that in the past had to be looked up in a lexicon, as well as their meaning, based on BAGD and other standard lexicons. Grammatical--It provides grammatical insights from the leading Greek grammars, including Wallace's Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics. Exegetical--As the title of this revised and expanded edition indicates, The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament also provides the reader with a wealth of exegetical insights and nuances, as well as references to a wide range of commentaries, monographs, journal articles, historical works, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and so forth.  This is a "must have" for those doing diagramming.

Grammatical Aid to the Greek New Testament

by Robert Hanna

Hanna's work draws on eight Greek grammars from which numerous valuable comments are collated in a verse-by-verse order in the New Testament.  The work is not exhaustive and not every grammatical construction is included, but only on those that call for particular clarification.  This work is presently out of print, but Amazon.com will perform a book search for you.  Go to the extra effort and try to obtain a used copy if possible.
