 How-To Manuals

Many people remember vaguely from their English high school courses that a teacher might have taught sentence diagramming.  But what motivation was there to learn?  Now, many years later, comes the motivation: you have learned New Testament Greek, and have heard or seen how important it is to diagram, but to whom do you go to now?  The works below give seminal and valuable methodological procedures for diagramming the Greek New Testament.

Principles and Practice of Greek Exegesis by John Grassmick Principles and Practice of Greek Exegesis
   by John Grassmick

By far this is the most authoritative and consulted work on the principles and practice for diagramming the Greek New Testament.  Rightfully so, Professor Grassmick views diagramming as an integral part in the process of properly interpreting any New Testament text. The entire Epistle to the Colossians is diagrammed (UBS3) with grammatical notes as illustrative of the diagramming procedure in New Testament biblical exegesis.

An Intermediate Guide to Greek Diagramming

by Eric Sowell

An Intermediate Guide to Greek Diagramming by Eric Sowell helps to fill the void for those interested in diagramming the Greek New Testament beyond the basics.  This is a very helpful manual that approaches diagramming in the same style which Dr. John Grassmick proposes in Principles and Practice of Greek Exegesis (Dallas Theological Seminary).  This manual is free to download and only available in PDF.

Diagramming The Greek New Testament Diagramming The Greek New Testament
   by Richard P. Belcher

This is an introductory work to New Testament Greek diagramming.  It's usefulness is in its comparative ease of use and differing artful presentations from the "Grassmick" model above.

  Diagrammatical Analysis
   by Lee L. Kantenwein

In some respects, this volume will be the most helpful to the newcomer to Greek diagramming.  Diagrammatical Analysis illustrates first diagrammatical analysis in English, and then from the corresponding Greek text.  The methodology of the author builds from the simple sentence, showing how different parts of speech, phrases and clauses relate to it.  However, its introductory approach may not suffice for those who are already proficient in New Testament Greek.  This is the only manual discovered thus far that also illustrates Hebrew diagramming.
