Synopsis

Lesson Three lays the foundation for consistent and proper phonetic pronunciation of Greek words.  Phonics is the study between letters and their speech sounds.  It is a very helpful method of learning to pronounce the correct sound with the letter or letter combinations they represent.  This lesson emphasizes the elementary pronunciation of all Greek consonants, vowels and diphthongs.  Throughout the lesson, these letters are blended into sounds to form single and multi-syllable Greek words.  Spanning the lesson are seventy MP3 audio files to aid pronouncing Greek words.  Also, a ten-page study guide is included at the conclusion of the lesson.

Study Aids

The following study aids are designed to reinforce the material presented in Lesson Three.  An "answer key" is provided when necessary.  The different levels represent an escalating level of difficulty.  It is recommended to begin with the least difficult exercises in Level One and proceed through Level Three to receive the maximum benefit from the exercises.  All PDF links open in a new window.

You may download all the paginated study aids for Lesson Three in a ZIP file by clicking here.

Study Guide Answer Key [PDF]  Instruction
This is the answer key for Lesson Three Study Guide.  It is important to answer all of the lesson's exercises before consulting the answer key.  SA3:1-10

Writing Greek Letters I [PDF]  Exercise
This short exercise emphasizes practicing writing the Greek letters by tracing.  It
reinforces proper penmanship for forming Greek letters properly.  Poor penmanship lasts a lifetime and letters will be confused later, leading to frustration.  This exercise should be repeated until all the Greek letters are familiar and written without effort.  The text is from John 1:1-8.  SA3:11-12

Writing Greek Letters 2 [PDF]  Exercise
This short exercise emphasizes practicing writing the Greek letters.  It advances from the previous exercise in that letters are copied and not traced.  The text copied is 1 John 2:1-5.  This exercise should be repeated until all the Greek letters are familiar and written without much effort.  SA3:13-14

Guide to Pronunciation [PDF]  Instruction
The first step in learning to read New Testament Greek is to recognize the letters of the alphabet, and then to blend the vowels and consonants into syllables and then words.  Twenty sentences are used in this exercise as
a guide to the proper pronunciation of the Greek letters by using known English sounds.  SA3:15-16

LEVEL TWO

Title, Link and Description

Greek capital letters are transcribed to their corresponding small letters.  This exercise helps to gain familiarity with the Greek capital letters.  SA3:19-20

The Greek Alphabet Flash Cards [Audio HTML] Exercise
This delightful on-line exercise was developed by Timothy Ayres (Australia) to aid in learning the Greek Alphabet.  The object for this exercise is to identify each Greek letter on sight.  The student has the options to view each letter in their alphabetical order or skip ahead and select a particular letter for further study.  Details for each letter is available, including both its Greek and English spellings, its transliteration, the letter's pronunciation, and phonetic value.  The student also has the option to view an animated formation of each Greek letter.  There is no SA pagination associated with this Audio HTML exercise.  This same exercise is also located under the Study Aids for both Lessons One and Two.
