Synopsis

Lesson Four focuses on the seventeen Greek consonants.  The consonants may be best learned by understanding their relationship to one another in several ways.  Perhaps the most functional phonetic classification is according to what speech organ (throat, teeth and lips) used in their pronunciation.  In this lesson, the seventeen Greek consonants are studied and divided into two broad categories: the nine stops and the twelve continuants.  These two broad categories are again subdivided according to the nature of the sound and vocal organs used in producing them.  Help in learning to pronounce Greek phonetically is aided by thirty-eight MP3 audio links that span this lesson, including the eight-page Study Guide at the conclusion of the lesson.

Study Aids

The following study aids are designed to reinforce the material presented in Lesson Four.  An "answer key" is provided when necessary.  The different levels represent an escalating level of difficulty.  It is recommended to begin with the least difficult exercises in Level One and proceed through Level Three to receive the maximum benefit from the exercises.  All PDF links open in a new window.

You may download all the paginated study aids for Lesson Four in a ZIP file by clicking here.

LEVEL ONE Title, Link and Description

Matching Names, Places, and Titles [PDF]  Exercise
Sixty Greek proper names and titles of New Testament people and places are listed in the left-hand column.  They are to be matched with their English counterpart listed in the right-hand column.  Because many Greek proper nouns are transliterated into English, a knowledge of vocabulary is not necessary to do this exercise.  SA4:25-28

Quiz [PDF]  Test
Twenty-three questions cover the essentials of Lesson Four.  The quiz has multiple choice questions, as well as true or false questions.  SA4:29-34
