Paul's letters are much longer than those of his contemporaries. First Epistle to the Corinthians is an excellent example of his full-orbed literary style due to its length and vocabulary. Paul's deliberate rhetoric addresses the emotions, human desire, and the necessary steps to correct the problems the Corinthian assembly was experiencing. Paul communicates to those whom he loves the transformative power of the proclamation of the cross and Jesus' resurrection.

Paul arrived in Corinth during his second journey. He stayed in Corinth for eighteen months, longer than he had stayed anywhere else except for Ephesus. The importance of correct doctrine which Paul had previously imparted to the assembly was under attack by those who were undermining the apostle's teaching. Paul writes this letter to rebuke the disorderly conduct as a result of erroneous doctrine. He also responds to questions that had been brought to him by the household of Chloe. After two thousand years, Paul's answers to these questions that arose in the Corinthian assembly are pertinent to us in our life and in our assemblies today.

As a strategically located Roman city, Corinth was famous for its intellectual and material prosperity and was the capitol of Achaia. It also became infamous for its corruption. An example of its immorality was found in the Temple of Venus (Aphrodite), which hosted one thousand priestesses dedicated to prostitution in the name of deities. The city's corrupted moral values took its toll on the assembly, which Paul addresses.
